Introduction to Building
I think in general people have a very good idea of what is
expected in building a zone just from their playing experience as a
mortal (hopefully you played as a mortal for quiet a while before we made
you a god, but thats not always the case, hehe). What I want to emphasize
is that we have a new philosophy here on how we want you to build zones.
The mud is made up of zones for logical convience, so people can
efficiently be given chunks to work on. The coders need to worry about
zones existences and you as a builder should be concerned for things in
your zone (you will be held accountable for the zone) BUT beyond that you
should forget about zones and think about the world as a whole. Your zone
should seemlessly fit into it.
In short, if people can easily tell one zone from another, You
Failed! I realize right now that in fact most mortals can easily spot
where one zone ends and the next one begins, but that should be changing
as that is no longer consistent with our new building ideology. Your zone
should blend into the place it is put. This means, prior to building
anything, you need to have a good background as to: where your zone is to
be put, what zones does it border, what continent is it on, what theme is
your zone made for, what zones should be strongly affiliated with your
zone, etc? All these things you should have firmly placed in your mind
prior to building.
If this is not the case you can try and think up and idea, or you
can talk to the Zone Coordinator and they should help you do this. The
single most important point you should understand is that your zone should
be designed in such a way as to be immovable! You shouldn't be able to
just reassign the exits and change a room desc or two and have your zone
make as much sense in its new spot as it did in its old spot. Your zone
should be built to be fixed in one place.
Believe me if you build your zone with a firm idea of where it
goes and how your going to link it there it will be infinitely easier to
build and a lot more fun for you as a builder. Its much harder to run out
of ideas when you can just refer to the zones around yours whenever you
can't think up anything really cool.
Integration! is the key word.
