Building Rooms for Your Zone
Redit is the editor you use to build rooms for your zone. This
is the section from object 3598 (the builders guide) on redit:
In this editor you can make, delete, edit, and add rooms. To start the
editor, just type REDIT <room vnum>. The vnum of the room can be seen in
the roomflags, or by typing STAT ROOM. There are varios things you can
do in this editor. You can name the room title, change the descr of a
room, add roomflags, add edits, and add signs. When you edit this editor,
Be sure to save the changes by typing REDIT SAVE <zone number>.
That is how you use redit; the rest is fairly straight forward, if
you have specific questions on sector types or something that can be found
in the CircleMUD Builder's Manual.
Any zone can have up to 100 rooms, for building purposes we
expect your zone to have at least 90 linked rooms (your house doesn't
count as one). You should use extra descriptions frequently (at least one
in ten rooms should have one or more extra desc).
Put some effort into writing nice room descriptions; it makes
your zone a lot better for others to look at and for yourself as well.
Don't forget to let people know what's around the room they are in (by
this I mean, that if they can see the spires of the cathedral to the
North, or the sun glissening off the snow capped mountains to the south,
PUT it in the room description).
You need at least 90 rooms, running out of ideas? How about
making more bars (how many towns do you know with only one bar?) or shops
(mortals seem to like shops a lot, not sure why), alleys, or make the
countryside or area where your zone links to another bigger and better.
Here is another idea, try making houses which mob familys who live in the
town live in (this is nice, because then thieves have houses which they
can pick the lock on and go into and steal; thieves are always complaining
about not being able to break into other character's houses, so make some
fake homes which mobs live in which thieves can break into.
One last thing, there is a small chapter on hometowns which you
should read ("read hometowns") which documents what particular things a
hometown should have. You might want to look at it if you are building
any city, but ALL hometowns should have the elements listed there.
Please type "read Oedit" to see the next chapter.
